Can water be used? What grid are the two surfaces?** A: I am not sure about the grind of the surfaces but it contains two surfaces a coarse one and a smooth one. It is good to sharpen all kind of kitchen knives and cleaver. Few drops of water could be used for grinding but you need to ensure that if you knife's blade is made of high carbon steel instead of stainless steel like most kitchen knives then you need to wipe the blade dry and coat it with a drop of linseed oil to avoid rusting. Personally, I use less water and use a drop of linseed oil for some of my expensive blades. **Q: Which side is the fine side , is it the dark side with the logo printed on it ?** A: Dear Amrinder Ji,The side which feels smoother than other on touch is FINE and the other is Coarse ( Rough ). **Q: is the stone oil based or water based ? I ordered it but dint know what to use. Please advice.** A: I have used it for sharpening kitchen knife. It brought life back into the knives. Dimensions are very good making it easy to use. The course side really shaves off the metal from the beavel of the blade restoring the damaged blade straight and the fine grit really sharpens the knife to a fine finish. Sharp enough to start enjoying cutting vegetables. If you want to sharpen a camping knife, I suggest to add a 1000 grit to the sharpening followed by a strop.
