The VX-6R can recieve in these frequencies, but not transmit. Reception is relatively poor with the factory antenna, but you can remove the factory antenna and connect the unit to a standard CB antenna to enhance reception signal strength and clarity. The radio can also recieve, AM, FM, HF, marine, aircraft and police bands. It will not transmit on those bands. This radio only transmits on portions of the 2 meter, 1.25 meter, and 70 centimeter bands. It only has TX coverage on the 2M, 1.25M and 70cm. It can scan on a list of present bands, or ones that you program into the radio. You don't need a computer to program the radio, but it does make it easier if you have a lot of freqs to put in. If you want to listen to Ham, Aircraft, weather, publicworks and commercial bands, then this radio will work. Most Police and Fire departments are upgrading to encrypted mode systems. This radio will not work for those systems. **Q: this is useful in the car? it can work in any country? what distance? it can be a substitute for bulky car radio?** A: The radio is useful in the car on 2-m. The 440 and 220 bands are more susceptible to being blocked by the metal, and, as the previous responder stated, it is best if you use it with an external antenna, like a magnetically mounted one. The advantage of the bulky car radios is that they will transmit at 2-m up to 45 watts as opposed to the 5 watts of this radio. Does more than I ever envision doing but I'm new to Ham radio so we'll see. Already got basic repeater programming down and have listened in on a few sessions by our local radio club. Can't broadcast yet as I'm unlicensed but looking to change that soon. I did order another antenna as I've read the stock Yaesu one is iffy in places. Main reason was to have an option as I'm sometimes in the house and sometimes outside. I was playing with the buttons and got stuck in some memory cycle error I couldn't get out of. YT videos on resetting the radio didn't help but I called Yeasu, got a fast pickup, spoke to a tech and he walked me through it within a couple of minutes. Sorted. Great product backed up with great tech support. (techs name was Tim). Excited to learn how to get the most out of it as I get more into the art of Ham. I am still looking for a cable to program it with. I have one which is going back as the Mac driver is out of date and I cannot get it to recognize the radio. I also got a Baofeng as a backup and bought a cable for that which worked like a champ right out of the bag.
