There are 4 modes to choose from but this is basically forward or reverse motion and heat or no heat and it was easy to change between modes while using the product. There is the option to turn off the infrared heat, but I liked how soothing that felt and it never got too hot. Note that unlike a massage gun, the speed cannot be adjusted, and the unit must be plugged in to use but the cord is a good length and not too short. I will say that it gives a deep massage and you definitely feel it in the muscle and any knots you may have. Attaching the foam pad or applying less pressure make it less intense but I was a little sore the next day. It has a 15-minute shut off timer which is a helpful reminder. This massager worked GREAT for the hamstrings, IT band area, and calves areas that I tried it on also. Highly recommend! Not nearly as strong as I would like, but still provides an OK amount of pressure. What I do NOT like is that it is very cumbersome and awkward to move around. If it had some sort of handle or way to grasp the unit for movability, it would be an improvement. ALSO - the button to turn the unit on is way too small. Plus, the cord is on the wrong side and is very inconvenient to me. If this unit came with a remote and a handle of some sort, it would be a HUGE improvement.
