## Description

Product Description ExpoDisc, the original white balance filter gets even better. Set white balance, meter for exposure and dust map your sensor with the only calibrated and certified 18% transmission incident light metering filterWhether shooting in RAW or JPEG, photographers using ExpoDisc to white balance their images save valuable time in photo editing software. When used to set a custom white balance, the ExpoDisc consistently produces excellent color in natural, artificial, and studio lighting, and it even excels in difficult mixed lighting environmentsThe ExpoDisc is far easier to use than any gray card, white card or calibration target. Simply place the ExpoDisc in front of your lens and capture the incident light while setting your camera's custom white balance. Using an ExpoDisc custom white balance will virtually eliminate the need for RAW or JPEG post-capture colour adjustments. The ExpoDisc is not just for white balance, though. The precision calibration and uniformity of the ExpoDisc means that it can also be used to meter for an 18% incident exposure and to produce a dust map of the image sensor. To meter for an 18% exposure, stand at the subject's position and aim the camera back towards the intended shooting position. Use the camera's meter as seen through the viewfinder to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO until a proper exposure is indicated. It's also possible to make exposure adjustments based upon the position of the histogram spike on an ExpoDisc test shot. Simply adjust the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO until the spike is centred. Box Contains ExpoDisc 2.0 Neutral and Portrait White Balance Filter 77mm

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it matter if 77mm expo disc does not fit a nikon 85 1.8g which is 67mm? Or do i now need the bigger expo disc.**
A: It's preference really for example on my canon lenses I don't have a several expo disc I.e one for my 82 mm one for my 77 mm etc I tend to let hover the disc over the lenses that it doesn't fit and it seems to do the job however if you only have the one lenses why not sell the old disc and purchase the correct size. Either way both options are workable. Hope this helps?

**Q: I'm colourblind. Will Expodisc get the colour balance right in camera and hence remove the need for colour correction post production?**
A: The ExpoDisc 2.0 is worth every penny because it only allows 18% of the light to pass through to the image sensor so WB is generally spot on. Online tutorials are a must and will prove to be most useful. Another solution is to use a Speedlite flash gun fixed to the hot shoe. Set your camera to AWB and Evaluative metering. When the flash fires a pre-flash, the colour temperature (WB) is transmitted automatically to the camera which optimises the flash picture (WB). My experience has resulted in absolutely perfect (WB) images. My camera- Canon 700D. Hope this info is useful but do please contact me if you require more help. John Hogg

**Q: which mm size should i get for my sony a6500? if it doesnt fit the lens, can i just hold it over for the same result?**
A: Hello I would suggest you decide which lens [if you have more than one lens] you use the most and then go with that size lens. As these comemin a number of different sizes for example 82mm, 77mm etc.
You can hold it over your lens but I’ve always got much better results by having the correct fitting ExpoDisc for each of my lens but that’s entirely your choice at the end of the day.

**Q: does the 77mm fit other size lenses**
A: I just hold the disc over the lenses as long as the diameter is 77 or less. This works perfectly well and gives a true reading when pointed toward the light source. I don't use it continually as some of my shots have to be so quick I wouldn't have time to get a reading but when I am shooting for work that allows me the time I use the disc. I use Nikon D700 and D800 and Fujifilm X-E2 cameras

Saves SO much messing about - perfect colour balance.

I have always used white cards for colour balance with mixed results. Depending where the card was placed and the angle in relation to the light I would often get a colour cast, so I'd try again....and again. Using this gizmo takes only seconds and the result is spot on first time, every time. I even tried it with an ND filter attached the lens and again got a perfect result which I never could using cards. The only thing I've found is if using indoors, whilst the colour balance is bang-on, the exposure it suggests gives an image way too bright once the Expodisc is removed and the shot taken (about 2-stops) however shooting outside it's spot-on. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with the indoor usage but it's not a major concern as I just adjust the exposure back 2 stops and I'm good to go. BRILLIANT product - everyone should have one!

Brilliant kit and worthwhile for achieving those perfect shots.

*by S***H on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2015*

I saw a review comparing this to a cheap Chinese one and the results are not surprising.I think if you use a DSLR and you are wanting to take your pics to the next level, this is a must.If like me you ever used a light meter, this is basically how this works....Remember the inver cone light meters? incident and reflected readings?Cameras all take reflected light meter readings which is why they don't always work well, the old analogy of a white wedding dress in a white backdrop or the groom in black against the dark interior of the church, difficult to meter, incident readings are taken from the subject toward the camera, its the light coming to the subject and is the most accurate way of taking a reading. So you place the disc over your lens and take a reading looking toward where your camera will be. Thats an incident reading. The WB issue is also a must for digital users. OK so your not going to use it all the time, but those pics you want to be impressive, keepers, you will benefit from this. ie, sunsets if you ever took any sunsets and were disappointed at the result, the colours will not be as strong, why? because auto WB will try to rectify the light which is approaching the red band of the spectrum and correct it. Using the disc will give a setting for the true WB at the scene, the colours in the sky should then show up as you saw them, also use the disc at that time to take an exposure reading, as, that is also something difficult for your camera to expose for.I have tested this under some fluorescent lights and noticed my 60D gave a magenta cast in auto WB with the disc I didnt, I got pure white, the shot had a whiteboard in it. I wouldn't have seen the magenta cast to be honest with having used the disc, is was the true WB of that pic which showed up the magenta in the auto WB shot. I would say its worth the money, its seems to be calibrated and certified etc, also a nice lanyard and pouch and no light leak, like the Chinese copy I saw a review of. In this kit you get 4 filters, they are 2 of each +1 and +2 blue gels. These are for portraits. Why blue? because the disc will correct the colour in the blue gels thereby making a slight warm tone in your selected shot with the gel on to select the custom WB.'Update' after having this for a couple of years, I lost mine, so got another, they come in a silicone pouch now so even easier to get in and out,I have a G7X2 now as well as the DSLR's and I had a go with that, Canon dont make it as easy as some to set up a custom white balance but its fairly intuitive and once you have selected a menu option at least its there next time you go into the menu.I didnt bother deselecting auto focus on the G7X it coped ok, but the results are quite astoundingly different especially under different light.I think best that can be said is, if youve ever looked at some shots and thought, there is something not quite right, its good but not amazing? I would say usually the missing link is white balance is off. I took some sample pics of some plants in a window against the light and used both the white balance setting and the meter setting of the disc, the camera was then telling me that the settings were way out when I took the shot, but although the window was blown out, if I cropped the picture to get the plants it was perfect, true colours and well exposed. If you have been reading this and your considering the disc, give it a go, it will take a few practice shots to get it right, its a workflow thing but the results will amaze you.If there is ever any dominant colour or a general 'hue' in the shot, like taking a family shot against a brown shed in the garden, your camera will try to compensate for the brown shed, or if lots of people wore blue in your shot, you see auto white balance only has what the camera sees to determine a colour temperature.

Excellent - but learn to use it

*by R***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2018*

These are very good and in my opinion superior to a grey card. You need to learn how to use it and understand that it is for incident light and not for reflected light. In some situations this will not matter but if you are stood in bright light and the subject is in shade or is lit with different light your reading will be off.For colour this is very accurate and it can also be used to set your exposure - watch the you tube videos.overall very quick and accurate to use when you get used to it and very good for getting things right in camera when the lighting is mixed or a little difficult. Yes you can do this in post but this is a better solution for white balance and tint in one hit.
