A: 3/4 inch reasonably...1 inch max

**Q: would these work well pruning Japanese maples?**
A: Yes they would as long as the branches are under 1/2 inch.  The shears are well made and sharp.  Typical hi quality Japanese pruning shears. Keep them oiled to cut down on the rust.
