She was about dead when the shelter got her, starving, and with FIV. The vet thinks she's now about 8 years old. She doesn't know how to use her teeth to eat, and licks up treats, solid food, or soft food. Nowadays, she's full of energy and has lots of fun running around and watching her "TV" channels -- windows with bird-feeders, squirrels and whatever wild-life. But she doesn't play with many types of toys.She seems to only want to play with or chase things that are smaller than her head. She's only 8 pounds, so that's a pretty small head. Whenever we've introduced chase toys, hanging toys, balls, rubber or stuffed things or anything else, she won't go near them. Very small foam balls with tinsel, small catnip mice, and little stuffed fish with feathers are okay.Recently, I found some soft silicon lizards at the Dollar Tree, about 5-inches long, and tied one to a fishing pole with about 4-feet of elastic cord. She'll chase them for long periods, and she's starting to learn how to use her teeth to grab them. But they have to be moving all the time.I was at a thrift shop that has a couple of cats in a large container, with various toys and climbing perches. What caught my eye was a middle-aged cat laying on the floor in front of one of these roller-ball toys. He was quite comfortable, and was reaching out to smack one of the balls on the lowest level. It would quickly fly around the track, and he'd smack it again. He seemed to be having a great time, doing minimal exercise (as cats do), and keeping the ball moving. I decided to try the same toy at home.Our cat right away went over to investigate, but instead of being cautious, then afraid, she reached out to bat one of the balls. They move very easily -- almost no friction at all -- and they're about the size of her little foam balls. We've tried loose ping-pong balls in the past, but she won't touch them. Maybe a texture thing. These balls are like ping-pong balls, but because they can't go anywhere except around their own track, our cat seemed much more interested.We've had it about a month now, and although she doesn't constantly play with it, she does tend to get involved on a periodic basis. She's not bored with it, walking past it all the time. Instead, she'll have some energy to play, "notice" the balls on the track and smack one. Then, when it zooms around the track, she'll try to get it to come out. She'll circle the tower, climb on top, and even spread her arms out on both sides with each paw, to "trap" the ball. No luck...and she'll get more interested.From what we're seeing, she has a lot of fun with the whole thing. She doesn't get stuck, she's not afraid of it, and the balls are the perfect size to be non-intimidating. One of the very few toys that have been a good success.
