(how close are the strings to the frets?)** A: Hi - on mine, it's about 1mm on the 1st fret rising to a fraction under 3mm at the 12th fret. That's above the fret - add about half a mm to the fret board. I find it comfortable to use as beginner on the uke, though I have played a bit of guitar over the years. We don't practice enough, just once a week.
