The book is so comprehensive that it really is more to be consulted on a piecemeal basis where insight is required on a specific point of technique arisng during ones studies rather than a book to be worked through systematically. On that basis it is not a tutor book in the normal sense, where one works through from page one to the end, and is certainly not suitable for beginners as it would be too overwhelming. Basics is a tremendous compendium of insightful knowledge and seems to be a work of real enthusiasm and dedication to the advancement of violin pedagogy. If I have one constructive criticism to make, it is that this is a book which cries out to have an accompanying cd that would offer musical examples of the various techniques that are explained. For example, the many different techniques of bowing - just what does staccato bowing sound like as opposed to spiccato bowing? Of course if the student has a teacher on hand, this can be demonstrated in an instant, but for the student struggling on their own, like me, the cd would be the equivalent of having the proverbial picture that's worth a thousand words. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ VERY good book for anyone learning the violin (especially if you ... *by D***S on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2016* VERY good book for anyone learning the violin (especially if you are an adult student). Very detailed instructions on every aspect of playing the violin. Bow hold, left hand positioning, types of bowing, posture, arm positions, wrist position...everything in absolute minute detail. I have not yet finished the book as it is not a book to read...it is a book to read a page and do an exercise of what you were just taught. I suspect it will take me a better part of a year to get through the whole book. It is impossible to read or work through so being selective is a must. Sections are often begun with relevant points on technique, which I find illuminating. The title is a bit misleading, if you can master this your skill level will be way above basic. I only wish something similar was around in my early days of playing.
