Review: Nice product and good alternative to iPhone or Android - I won't go into all the features or interesting aspect of Windows Phone software, there are lots of reviews on line. The 1020 is a solidly engineered product in a superb metal body, with a good quality HD 720p screen. It is quite a large phone, a bit bigger than iPhone. The camera at 41Mpixel is very high definition and capable of taking excellent still and video images. The supplied software has some excellent features from a conventional SLR that the keen photographer will appreciate, as well as novel creative features. I particularly like the ability to tap the object you want to focus on in a scene in the phone display, which then sets the focal and exposure points for the shot, making that object perfectly exposed and in focus. Video is full 1080p and superb quality. The only let down is the stereo sound which is not as good as it could be, but is OK. The Nokia Here Drive + StaNav and maps are free and as far as I can see good quality. The navigation feature is good and has many settings to play with. It may not be up to the standard of TomTom or Garmin (I have done a back to back comparison) but is fine for my use. The HERE Maps feature will overlay places of interest, bars, cafes etc on the map and the LiveSight feature provides an "augmented reality" view of these POI super-imposed on the view seen through the camera, effectively labelling the building in front of you with names and function and so.So just point the phone at the view in front of you, and you can see what POI are in the area. Pretty cool. You also get walking direction to them. HERE Transit is a travel planning app and combines bus/tram and train routes and times to show you how to get to your destination. I didn't believe one route I planned as it ignored a short and obvious train trip - until I found out there was a replacement bus service running :-D so it was correct in fact. With all this mobile data use it is nice to see that the Data Sense app keeps track of your data use and tells you how much of your data allowance you have used. I like Nokia because they understand making reliable good quality phone calls, and the Lumia 1020 gets good reception and has good call quality. It also paired easily with my car bluetooth hands free and my Plantronics BT headset. Only slight niggle is that Windows Phone won't sync SMS messages with my car display where my Nokia N8 did. This is a Microsoft issue not Nokia. Although I haven't tried it the 1020 will also stream music over BT. Only minor niggles I have are the supplied wired headset used for the FM radio function or music playback is not as good quality as the one with the N8, but works OK. Charging is only USB or an extra cost wireless charging case. The Microsoft App Store has a fair number of Apps both free and chargeable. Not perhaps as good as Apple but enough for my modest needs, I found everything I needed in a day. You don't need a Windows PC to use this phone but it helps. So to sum up, an excellent alternative to iPhone or Android especially if having a fantastic camera is a priority as it is for me.
Review: Incredible Camera, Good Phone - As you probably know if you have already done some research, the Nokia Lumia 1020 has the best camera on any smartphone ever. That is all I needed to know as I was previously considering buying a compact camera to have out and about but after using this beauty, I realised that I won't be needing one. There are a couple of things you need to know about this phone: 1) The camera really is THAT good. It blows away any other phone on the market in any situation, capturing tons of detail and keeping images clear even in low light and the manual camera options thanks to Nokia's fantastic camera app really allow you to make the most of this hardware. There are some drawbacks, such as the older S4 Pro custom processor not being able to really handle that kind of high Megapixel count, meaning shot to shot time is achingly slow and when using Nokia's Camera app by default it takes around 7 seconds from locked to being able to take a photo. This is reduced to around 4 seconds when using Microsofts camera app but even so, it is a slow camera. Once you learn to work around that though, you can produce some truly stunning images that people refuse to believe are from a smartphone! 2) It is a Windows Phone. This is either a plus or a minus depending on who you are really. I already have an Android tablet, so I use that for playing games and getting the latest apps and that means I don't need my phone to be that much of a smartphone. That doesn't mean I think that the 1020 can't be a great smartphone, but there is a certain quality of patience required to fully appreciate it. A lot of the popular apps like SnapChat and Instagram are either unavailable or have better 3rd party alternatives. Personally I use 6Snap and 6Tag, as Rudy Huyn seems to be an exceptional developer for Windows Phone. Basically, as long as you don't NEED the latest and greatest apps and games, Microsoft has you covered with everything else. There are also certain unique apps like the Nokia Camera app and Here Maps, both the best in their class on any platform that make the usual day to day activities and features significantly better on Windows Phone. Furthermore, the cohesive and brilliantly executed design of Windows Phone (especially 8.1) allow the whole experience to be one which is both gorgeous and really easy to get to grips with! In case you haven't noticed, I am a massive fan. The camera simply wins my heart and the beautiful unibody design coupled with the elegance and style of Windows Phone 8.1 make the whole experience a pleasure and I thoroughly recommend the 1020 to anyone with a penchant for design or photography.

I won't go into all the features or interesting aspect of Windows Phone software, there are lots of reviews on line. The 1020 is a solidly engineered product in a superb metal body, with a good quality HD 720p screen. It is quite a large phone, a bit bigger than iPhone. The camera at 41Mpixel is very high definition and capable of taking excellent still and video images. The supplied software has some excellent features from a conventional SLR that the keen photographer will appreciate, as well as novel creative features. I particularly like the ability to tap the object you want to focus on in a scene in the phone display, which then sets the focal and exposure points for the shot, making that object perfectly exposed and in focus. Hopefully the below is useful and can appreciate this may not be everyone's thoughts... Camera: The camera works very well and it's 41MP hardware serves as a great selling point but also allows novices who know very little about photography settings to play around and produce some amazing results. There is a great help walkthrough when first using the phone. The software that comes with the phone is very good and you could get away with not downloading any further apps however the app store does provide a great variety of photo editing software (+ others). The camera is not completely instant at taking a pictures and moving to the next take. Feels like the apple phone is faster at taking one picture to the next but then it doesn't have such a large photo file to process and save, but its not a huge deal as it only takes a second or two and your onto your next snap. The options available for the type of shots you can take clearly outweigh the timing issue (huge array of differing shots available). Holding down the camera button will take you straight to taking the picture even when the screen is locked so you wont miss a moment. The application the camera opens up in is customisable as your able to use different apps depending on the type of picture you want. If your thinking of this or an SLR then there is no competition - An SLR which designed only for photography would be the way to go. But as phone camera there is nothing out that competes. Question is whether you want to carry an SLR with you and phone or will your shots mainly come from your phone. Windows: Having not owned a windows phone before and predominately coming from Android this was a smooth transition. The windows operating system is minimalistic that makes the dual core processor easy to multi-task. Very easy to use the operating system and plays well with efficiency but leaves room. One thing that was missing from windows is the notification bar that Apple and android have but this can be avoided by arranging your tiles i.e. email tiles at the top so you can instantly see if you have any new mail. The software for emails feels much more cosy then google and apple- unread emails are clear and grouping of mail can be expanded much more easily. OneNote is an amazing add-on and very clear and simple to use. Of course being windows you also have office (mobile version). Windows has had negative feedback about the volume of apps available, which I don't think is fair as much of the app stores in apple and android although they have larger quantity seem to also attract a large volume of rubbish apps. Windows shop/ app store feels more tidy haven't felt like the store doesn't compete with apple or android (Just depends on what you want from an appstore). They have some catching up to do to compete in the long-term but for now the apps available are varied and include much of what you expect: Youtube/ facebook/ Twitter/ Vine (beta)/ Instagram (beta)/ candy crush/ angry birds etc. Can expect this to grow as Windows strategy has been to grow there apps. The touch screen keyboard is very good and responsive - possibly one of the best used on a phone and auto-correction is very clever. Hardware: The battery lasts about a 1 day- 2 days with medium to heavy usage but this doesn't seem any different from the other phones in the market. There is a battery saver option and things like Wi-Fi automatic turnoff when phone is locked to save on some juice. Would have been nice to have a 2500 MaH instead of 2000 but that would most likely make the phone much heavier, so this is most likely for the better. The quality of the screen is superb and colours appear vibrant and picture is clear for movies/ trailers etc. Comparison between S4 and 1020 would be slim to tell the difference but preference proved to put my vote for the 1020, softer feel. The phone is solid and speakers are great. very clear when making and receiving calls and phonebook does an excellent job of giving the option of linking entries (just like Android). Does well at managing multiple email accounts and setting these up was effortless. Even when the phone is locked I seem to have a digital clock that is always on. Not sure how to remove this but doesn't seem to use much battery power but keeps my phone lit up night. update: this can be changed from the settings screen and suprisingly you can vary the digital clock to peek or off. Navigation is fantastic and is a life saver when lost on route somewhere. Much better then most phones (my opinion is that its much better then Google and Apple navigation). Maps can be downloaded and uses GPS and you can avoid data usage. So you can take this internationally without being charged for data usage. Phone is bulky but seems all phones are getting larger screens but still feels light enough to keep in your pocket. The phone is not flush from the back and camera does stick out but if your buying a case for the phone then look into getting one that will correct the back to bring it flat. Memory: the normal size is 32GB which is larger then most phones but the 64GB would have been a better option considering the picture sizes. But with all apps etc installed I had about 20GB free for my media. There is no expandable memory here but 32GB should be enough for any normal user. Overall thoughts: Phone is very good and does the job with an excellent camera to boot. Feels solid and hardware combination works well and there is no feel of lag etc. If you have an xbox account then you can even earn achievement points for the games played on the phone. The phone offers great multimedia device with great functionality. Nokia have shifted the goal posts here and putting emphasis back to camera phones. Skype calling is also amazing quality, beats the quality of my tablet. The phone is full of suprises and its much better then just being a superb camera phone.
