Hope this helps. **Q: will this be able to plane hardwood or composite wood?** A: The motor is powerful enough to plane hardwood, not sure you want to plane a composite, they are not designed to be planed? Might be better off with a specialty sand paper to work the composite. Just be aware from a woodworking standpoint planing hardwoods is going to cause blade sharpening to be needed more frequently. **Q: I'm new to woodworking, never hand planed anything -- how easy is this tool to use for someone like me? Is there a big learning curve? Thanks!!** A: I am a beginner too. It is still scary, but I think it's good thing because it makes me think twice before I push the button. Safety comes first. I tried regular hand plane, but cheaper ones needs to be calibrated and tuned, so it's not worth the time and effort. The more expensive ones are very expensive because I would need 2 or 3 of them with different sizes: $3 to 500 for new ones. Lucky if you get a nice used ones. I would go with traditional hand planer for fine wood working/furniture making, though. This little monster is great. It supposed to do 1/64" depth cut or something like that, but it will still leave a wedge/groove mark on a large board, and sanding will be needed. Or my planer needs to be tuned up. There's a YouTube video calibrating Ryobi planer. Unfortunately, I am replacing it because it cuts a plane wood even at Zero setting. I guess I was lazy and did not want to spend time on a 3 week-old new item to tune it up.
