We received it as a gift today, but will be out of town** A: I wouldn't put pink oyster spawn/substrate in the fridge. Other oyster mushrooms would be okay, but I understand the cold might kill pink oyster mycelium. Your best bet is to keep them closed and in a cool, dark place. I suspect they'd be fine. (In my experience, some of these could use more time to colonize anyway.) **Q: What type of lighting is needed for these and how much light do they need?** A: Mushrooms only need ambient lighting to grow, meaning you can grow these right on your countertop with overhead lighting, no problem! **Q: Why would the block of sawdust turn green? It only produced one small flush of 1.5 oz and then stopped when the whole block got all green and fuzzy.** A: Mine also produced one small flush then stopped and just produced little malformed bits that never turned into anything. I am new to growing mushrooms (or anything really) and was really looking forward to getting into this, maybe as a hobby. But then if I can't get the "easiest kit" to work... I was very disappointed. **Q: What state are these grown in before shipping?** A: They are still in the spore stage. In just a few days after watering they start to grow. Bought two for our grown kids for Christmas, they both loved them. They are fun to watch grow and look just like the picture on the box at harvest. It's amazing to watch how fast the mushrooms grow once they start pinning. They pretty much double in size everyday until it's time to harvest them. I'd say once they start it takes about a week until they are ready to cook. I was amazed how good they taste. Pink Oyster are probably my favorite tasting, but I've grown several varieties all of which are so much better than regular old button mushrooms. It's a neat hobby and if you've never tried wild mushrooms go for it.
