**Q: Will I be able to slide the brass cover over it**
A: The only  way to close an inkwell cover is if the insert sits down below the opening. If it rests on the opening the lid will not close. 
Measure from where the bottom of the insert will sit making sure the sides are the correct diameter with the sides of your inkwell and that it doesn't go over the rim of the opening.
