The book does not disappoint. I have read many books on relationships, attachment styles, and interpersonal communication, but none resonated with me the way this book has. It’s written in very accessible and easy-to-read language, peppers in the author’s own personal experiences, and largely conveys the various concepts through client case studies to reinforce and provide context to the information. Many of the books I have read on related areas focus heavily on the relationship and how to navigate various scenarios and situations. What I found extremely helpful about Jillian’s approach was her ability to present and clearly demonstrate how our own preprogrammed patterns and experiences are often the root cause, usually subconsciously, of most of our heartache and interpersonal turmoil. Though many of the concepts seem logical and almost obvious, most of them are things we take for granted or ignore, and Jillian was able to turn the spotlight back around on myself and illuminate these glaring behaviours and beliefs. For the first time I really saw myself in many of the situations presented, and was able to recognize these traits and associated patterns to myself and my partners in past relationships. Mind blown - it really clicked with me and made so much sense, and I have already been able to implement and integrate some of the advice. Still a long way to go, but I found so much value and wisdom in the pages - I have already gifted a copy to someone very close. Jillian’s light and easy style combined with so much powerful information makes this a MUST-read for anyone hoping to improve their existing or future relationships. As the title suggests - it begins with us. We must look at our whole selves in order to enact positive change in our love lifes. Jillian's teachings make taking responsibility for this a fun and exciting prospect rather than something that feels scary and unachievable. I really recommend completing the self-reflection questions at the end of each chapter (or each truth) before you move onto the next, as it consolidates what you have read. The questions/prompts really make you think about yourself and your own love life to a depth that is hard to achieve on your own without guidance. Thank you Jillian - I am so grateful for your work and wisdom. I will be returning to this book for years to come and recommending it to loved ones whether they are single or in a relationship - as the work doesn't stop once you find a partner!
