FluvalSurface Aquarium Skimmer for Series 05 06 and 07 Canister Filters, All Breed Sizes

Have been using for two months, zero issues. The Fluval Surface Skimmer does its intended job very well. After a very short time to adjust the skimmer flow rate, a month's worth of oily surface scum buildup was 90% gone in only a few minutes. Overnight (or less) and the water surface was immaculate.There are a few reviews that complained of having to futz too much with the skimmer flow rate. I have found that, yes, there is some very minimal amount of futzing required to get the flow where you want it. However, certainly not worth complaining about. Perhaps my setup is more friendly to the product than others.Here's what I have:30 gal long, Fluval 107 (excellent), and of course the surface skimmer.I keep the filter flow slightly less than max, which best guess is around 120 gph.Pros:Does its intended job very well.It connected to my Fluval 107 hoses with ease.Adjusting is easy.When appropriately adjusted, completely silent.Cons:Instructions are lacking, but there's really not much to it.Takes up more room in the tank than simple inlet. It might be unsightly in some setups.Does require periodic adjustment. (But this adjustment is super easy).The skimmer flow adjustment gets catchy after a couple of months of use making turning it not so smooth.I don't consider this an issue, it still works fine, just something I noticed. Others might ding it for this.Tips:After a filter change/cleanup is when I have to readjust the skimmer. Likely because with cleaned up media the filter flow rate is different from before.Clockwise = slower skimmer flowCCW = Faster skimmer flow. Adjust too far and it sucks the skimmer tube down under the tank water level.I have found that keeping the water level inside the clear skimmer tube to about a 1/2" above the black main tube works well for me. This will drop with tank water level (evaporation). You'll see what I mean if you have one or get one. The level changes with the flow rate adjustment.

I’ve got one of these on a 20 long planted tank that has been nearly flawless for about three years.This one is on a new, dirted 29.I connect them to the intake of small HOB filters. (works well to keep water surface clean) When I opened this new one, the black, plastic rod was bent.I set it up and ran it, hoping that it would warm up and straighten out.It’s been a couple of weeks now and I can’t adjust the flow (adjusting rod sticks in the threads pretty bad) and I have some bamboo skewers pushing the black rod to the center of the cup in order to free the cup to float and move freely like the older unit does. (see photo).I’ve reached out to black hole skimmers and would like to try their product (if I can plumb it to the intake of my AquaClear 20 HOB.Overall, it’s a good product that really needs a different adjusting rod.Going to have to trash this one and try something else.

The media could not be loaded. Great product... I am using this on a 75gal NO SUMP reef setup... I am running 2 Fluval canisters a 404 and 406, but instead of attaching this to one of the canisters, I connected it straight to my HOB protein skimmer after a quick modification... My protein skimmer is a coralife super skimmer HOB... Since I have no overflow on this tank it gets the dreaded organic film on the water surface, which cuts down on light penetration... This was the perfect item to add as a surface attachment to my skimmer... And with the organic film going into my skimmers collection cup, I am effectively exporting the organic matter, instead of sending it into the canister to sit and negatively affect my water quality... I have had it running for over a month now, and have not experienced any of the negative results that some of the other reviewers have had... My water surface is rather turbulent, and the float has not sank even once... The product itself is slightly larger than I had pictured it would be (( tube is 8" high x 1" dia, with the floating cup apx 1-1/2" dia and adds 2"- 3" to height + another 4" for the adjustment "stick")), but in my 75g its no big deal... However I could see it being an issue in small tanks... The adjustment "stick" does sit up pretty far ((4" above water surface)) and could be an issue if you use glass tops, or a canopy over your tank... The suction cups are perfect Fluval quality parts, and hold very well... Attaching to my coralife skimmer was easy, removed the flex hose and attached a small piece of 5/8" hose with a plastic hose clamp directly to the intake on the coralife... Surface film was gone in less than 5 mins, and my water looks pristine... This surface skimmer is a very cost effective way to add overflow to a tank that is not drilled... Highly recommended product...

Quick delivery, thanks amazon.Now to the review.This skimmer does a great job of removing surface scum and debris.Installation is a breeze even though there are no directions.The pictures on the back of the packaging give you a basic idea of Install.The reason for 4 stars is because the shaft that comes out the top for adjustments came a little warped or not 100% straight.It is plastic so I gave it a little heat and straightened it out.I read about this issue from other reviewers.I think this is a manufacturing or packaging issue.Other than that, I have to say that this skimmer gets the job done.One more thing I did not add, this unit is very quiet. No rattling or loud water noises.I highly recommend.Update--1/9/2024.This skimmer is doing a great job of skimming surface debri and scum. I ordered a second one for my new freshwater setup.Simple to install and quiet operation.
