Dogs have a shorter digestive tract and higher stomach acid content than people, and spore probiotics can survive long enough to actually get to the intestines to be beneficial. I typically open these capsules and sprinkle 1/2 on each of my dogs' breakfasts. One of them has always struggled with GI issues, and these probiotics definitely help him.
