I found the poles to be very sturdy even though they are fairly light weight. I purchased one of those as well because I had to cover 3 adjacent windows. When you look at the pictures, you will see that they are set at a right angle. You certainly can do that. I wanted them in a straight line. In the pictures, you will see that the cross rods are not in a straight line. For me, that was not an option. I made one straight line across the 3 windows and it works perfectly. Originally I was concerned that the length may require a reinforced rod, but it turns out that it was not needed at all. There is no sagging or any issues with the curtains being too heavy for the setup. For anyone who is wondering what I was going to use for reinforcement, I would have purchased thick PVC pipe that I could slide inside the rod. If that didn't work, I have some rods that I decided not to install and they would have fit inside the rod.
