The bag ripped where one end of the shoulder straps attached. I sometimes carry a text book or two in addition to my laptop; so there might be 10 lbs or stuff in it every so often. I rarely use the shoulder strap, so I can't speak to it's durability. The zippers are well built. They don't open on their own, but they do open with little effort; so when opening, be careful to support the side with the laptop so it doesn't hinge open and slam down.
