It locks OK but not perfectly but for something that sits on the desk without moving, its OK and acceptable. Better not play with it as it will get scratches quickly, but its not meant to be played with, its a decoration and I know I have said that to my kid many times, she will probably pick it up and look at it time to time, so I finally glued the ball to the base so she doesn't have to open the top every time to place the ball back there.
