Sweet oats are easy to grow indoors, year 'round. Some say oats aid feline digestion and eliminate hairballs. Whether or not that's true, cats do love to nibble tender, sweet oats. So much in fact that oats are sold as "Cat grass." Growing is simple. Fill a shallow bowl or saucer with moist potting soil, sprinkle oats over the soil at about 10 seeds per square inch. Lightly press the seed into the soil Then just set the container on a windowsill, and keep it evenly moist not wet or dry. Germination is in about 5 days. Your only problem will be keeping your cats away from the grass. Actually all PETS love oat grass and any indoor CAT would greatly appreciate if someone grew them some oat grass to snack on. Dogs love it too! You need to plant them in or on top of dirt that is a couple inches deep so that the grass has nutrients to grow. The part that will be eaten is the green grass that sprouts up. When the larva are inside the kernels you cannot see them. So at first the seeds may seem fine, then a week or several weeks later the bag is crawling with bugs. The larva do eat the kernel from the inside out. Which makes the seed yield lower. So if you see any weevils inside your bag, put it in the freezer right away and keep it in there for a couple weeks, to kill any adults weevils or larva inside the kernels. He goes crazy about it, just like catnip if not more. Even with the seeds; he found the seed bag in the cupboard and ate his way through it then seeds went all over the floor and he rolled in them. I have to supervise him when he eats it or he pulls everything out and carries the soil all over the floor. He has not gotten sick from eating it like a pig. He just likes this as much as chicken, lol I've had no issue growing it. I will buy again but the bag will probably last me for a long time.
