Right out of the box were several cracks in the wood, one going across the whole width. One side is clearly the "better" side (meaning the wood grain is more straight and consistent) and I put it on top, but the underside (the one with more knots in the wood and more variation in the grain) might be the one you prefer on top. It's sturdy but not too heavy (I could carry it by myself). It takes a stain well, and looked really good when I was done.
