It still sees the 5GHz network, but will no longer connect, even after a reboot and after been given time to cool down (it runs quite hot). It connected to both networks fine before hand, and all other devices connect OK to 5GHz. Still usuable on 2.4 GHz network, but if it degrades further I'll be returning it.I had almost given up on getting this to work on Linux. None of the major distributions seem to have drivers for this adapter built in. It comes with source code for drivers, but these are out of date and don't compile against the latest kernels. I downloaded source code for what I thought was the right chipset: tried rtl8811 and 8812. Compiled OK but device didn't work. Then I plugged it into a windows laptop and noticed it was the 8814 chipset. Downloaded this, compiled it, and it finally worked!So here are a few tips. Please note that I'm not an expert in this stuff so it's unlikely I'll be able to answer any questions for you. The device I bought was the 1750 with the two aerials. I have no idea whether this applies to the other products this vendor sells. (BTW, seller delivered next day at no extra cost, so full marks on that front.) I'm using Xubuntu based on Ubuntu 16.04.5 with kernel 4.15.1. Do an internet search for "rtl8814au driver". You should get to a github page.2. Download as a zip using the "clone or download" green button.3. Unzip to an empty directory, open a command line terminal there and type "make".4. There are no end of possible errors if you don't have the right stuff already installed. You just have to work your way through the errors. e.g. If it says some library is missing then try "sudo apt-get install whateverlibraryismissing".5. Neither of the adapters was expensive, so I felt I had nothing to lose in buying more powerful one to see if it worked any better for me at my uncle’s house in Cornwall. In any case, I knew my sister would welcome the single adapter as she cares for our mother in a hamlet on the Welsh border where internet speeds vary. Both adapters significantly improved my browsing experience in Cornwall on a basic standard broadband connection, but I favoured this adapter over the single one.On my latest trip to Cornwall I couldn’t get onto the internet at all for the first few days, and then I discovered that my uncle had been sent a new router from his ISP (and the old standard broadband had been disabled). Once I’d set up the new router I didn’t need a Wi-Fi adapter, but I’m glad to have tried one - although I’d have felt annoyed if I’d spent a lot on this product for the short time I used it.I’m quite old, and not very techy, so I struggled a bit trying to fathom out how a Wi-Fi adapter worked but, after reading the instructions properly, and downloading the driver as per the instructions, I found it quite easy to set up. It saved me a lot of time and frustration when browsing the internet away from home.Once the drivers are installed, the antennae simply screw onto the USB, which plugs into the computer’s USB port. The antennae open to 45 degrees, and swivel 360 degrees, so I had fun moving the m around to find the best signal. I got there in the end though. Although I do not currently need to use this adapter, I shall hang onto it as I travel around a bit and I often come up against rubbish Wi-Fi. So it will come in handy, and remain in my laptop bag for future use, or to lend to anyone else. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install, works very well even on USB 2 *by S***K on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August 2018* My router is on the first floor at the of our three-bedroom terraced house because that's where the desktop PC is, and the desktop does not have WiFi so needed to connect to the router by Ethernet cable. This meant that I was not getting a good signal on my mobile devices on the ground floor at the back of the house which has an extension. i was considering getting a mesh WiFi system for around £300, but thought I'd try moving the router downstairs and adding a WiFi adapter to the PC at a tenth of the price, especially as with a Vodafone-supplied router you can't put it into modem mode so can't get the full functionality of the mesh network. I was a bit nervous of how well this would work since my elderly PC only has USB 2 ports and adapters of this type require USB 3 for best results. However, it is working very well. I now have a much better signal downstairs, obviously, and getting a pretty good signal on the PC. Even though (presumably) because it is USB 2 I am only getting 2.4 GHz on wireless n rather than 2.4 and 5 GHz on wireless ac, I am getting pretty fast browsing. I have tried audio streaming with Tune in Radio and Radioplayer on the PC, and have had no buffering or dropouts, and I have watched YouTube videos at 1080p and Amazon Prime Video at best quality on the PC with no problems of buffering or dropouts. Moreover on Windows 10 the adapter installed instantly and smoothly, without needing to use the supplied CD.
