Simply remove plastic from the bite valve. There is a pre-cut slit on the tip of the rubber bite for liquids to flow through the hose to mouth. Pinch the ends of the rubber bite to break the pre-cut slit and create the hole (in pictures). Unlocking the valve: The valve will be locked when you receive it. First, the mouthpiece came not completely manufactured (the opening slit was still closed and I had to use a knife to open it). Second, it is really hard to suck water out of, you'll end up sucking more air than water and drinking becomes a hassle (which defeats the purpose of a hydration pack). Third, it has no firmness or handle, so it is very difficult to fill. Fourth, the neither the hose or spout on the bag are standard sizes, so they will not be compatible with Camelbacks (or other hydration packs you may have bought with a backpack or from an outdoor store). I actually bought this entire hydration pack because it was cheaper than buying a new hose, which was really all I needed.
