Prob got up to 5 or 6 mph. I never did it for very long though so not sure how long the battery would last doing that all day. Goes pretty slow until you kick it into the 5th gear and then you feel a nice push. I use the 55 pound thrust version on a 16ft canoe with fishing gear battery etc totaling 220lbs plus my fat butt of 260 and have had one other person weighing in at 300lbs totaling 780lbs and this motor in top speed (5) does the job with ease nicely, even in high winds. As for using it on a lake that depends on if you are in America, the state you are in and what the state and local laws are on lakes. My state requires the boat to be registered if using a gas or electric motor. **Q: Is it made for salt water?** A: Hi, Yes! All of our motors are rated for both Salt and Freshwater.
