When I bought mine, the Verizon rep relayed that to me, saying that phone data is throttled to a certain extent while Jetpack data is not. However, I was skeptical, thinking she was only trying to make a sale. Surprisingly, she was correct. Additionally, the battery life on this thing is extraordinary. Even at 2 bars, you'll have better results with the Jetpack than your phone. I can't speak for other carriers, though.EditNumerous test have been done comparing hotspots to using a phone.
