Have a WiiU and don't want to use both rear USB ports.** A: I would expect your idea to work. I am using this cable to connect a bus-powered, portable USB 3 drive to my Roku USB 2 port. After connecting this cable to the drive, I connect the power-only plug of this cable to a powered USB 2 hub, then connect the data plug of this cable directly to my Roku 2 XS. The Roku cannot provide the needed 1000 mA to power the portable drive, but the old hub provides plenty of power. (The hub does not connect to the Roku. It is only used as a power source because the Roku was unable to recognize the drive when connected to hub that was then connected to the Roku. In addition, there is a port at the end of the switch designed to power a device requiring higher power consumption (like an iPad). This cable works great. Turns out these need a little more juice, which the PS3 by it self can't supply. Don't wheeze the juice... I plugged the power, aka the thinner cord, into a laptop and the other into the PS3... Bam! PS3 wont you back that thing up. You a big fat hard drive, Back that thing up...
