I’d also advise trying to find a longer piece of metal, or even better, one that curves upwards at each end rather than just being a flat rod ; the problem with ALL of these screw-in units is that as they get deeper into the soil the metal bar which is supplied is often too short to get proper purchase on it. Also, be prepared for a fair amount of the base to stick up out of the ground, as you can’t physically screw it further down than the point where the metal bar is flush with ground level. Solid as a rock once it’s in, though ! **Q: Can you get it deep enough so it's not visbile above the grass?** A: You wind it in with a Tommy bar - its a challenge to keep it vertical though. I found it best to wait until after a heavy rain shower as its easier to guide. You can wind it right in as far as the Tommy bar will allow as it gets flat with the ground. This leaves about 3/4 inch protruding with the little plastic hat on top. A good well designed product. Argos **Q: Can I use this for a flag pole ?** A: Hello, depending on the length of the pole you could. This isn't really long enough and I slipled a liece of tube over it for more leverage; the othe issue is that the holes for the bar to go through are about 2cm from the top of the spike. This means that you will always have at least that amount of the spike protruding aabove the soil surface. In practice it's more than that. Fortunately there are flats on the flange at the top, so I used a large adjustable spanner to get it in a bit more so it's now only about a centimetre above the surface. This one went straight into the hole I initially attempted firmly in place. Halfway and sticking out of ground but that’s what my old one did. Happy I got it straight the first attempt.
