It's metal and sturdy, so it won't bend easily which is important because we have it on cable that we string in front of our parking lot as a gate. We "drop" the gate and the sign every day, so if it were thin or poorly painted, we would have a banged up sign in no time. But, it's nicely made, thick enough to be able to handle being dropped from about 3 feet daily. We bought two thinking we'd have to change it out quickly.
