It works exactly like any other HDMI cable, except that it's one way. You must plug the end marked TV into the display, and the other end into your video source. This 8' cable packs down smaller than the 3' standard HDMI cable I was using previously. It's perfect for travel (connecting an iPad to a TV, etc). It works great for a computer/ external monitor as well, but it's kind of pricey for that application, where a standard cable would work just as well. I had ruined an HDMI port in my laptop using bulky stiff HDMI cables and wanted to remedy that by going with these supremely light and flexible cables. I use an HDMI switch and no matter what I do....these won't work with the switch.
