Tighten all bolts to be snug enough to safely hold weight but still loose enough to manipulate, and put a little weight on a barbell and rack it on the stands (as you would in a workout) and then do the final tightening (use a ratchet on one side and a wrench on the other) so that the stands will be even with your floor and not wobble when weight is fully racked.It had kind of a heavy greasy factory smell for about 2 weeks but wasn't too bad. The instructions are just an exploded diagram pic and the provided "wrenches" are useless. The rack catches are bare, so expect the knurling of your barbell to flake out some steel when racking, and you'll be eating some flakes from your barbell and the stands when benching. What I did after a couple of days was buy some 4x2" velcro strips (matched the width perfectly, actually) and put it on the J-hooks. It's been working great several times a week for months now, protecting both the barbell and stands.With free-standing squat stands, of course the stands are going to tip forward when you're racking heavy weight after squatting a set. If that makes you uncomfortable, then get a suitable power rack (same goes for if you need real spotter arms for squats because these aren't going to do squat (no pun) if you need to bail on a weight mid-rep).The safeties (spotter catch) are 6.5" long. I don't like how the bolt is set for the catch. There's a pin (maybe 0.5" long) that goes through the stand holes and a bigger threaded bolt around the pin that threads against the back of the catch itself. It's quite easy to have the pin hitting against the stand (slightly above or below a hole) and have it screw in super tight, just as tight and far (due to the stand bending in a bit) as when it's in a hole, so you'll need to eye it from behind and be 100% sure when you set the spot up and probably just keep it there for bench since they're not really helpful for squat.I had it set super tight with about 200 or so pounds racked on the spotter arms and one side slid down a couple of inches into the next hole when I was outside the room. Since then I've made 100% sure it's in the hole (as little as it goes in), and it's saved me a few times on some 1 rep max failures on bench press (though the short 6.5" length makes it a little challenging), but I don't have 100% faith, even when it's fully locked.If you're any bit hesitant about this over a cage like I was, then just get the cage and put this money towards that. I've been using it for months and will be getting a cage. Anything can happen when you're squatting and benching heavy or pushing yourself. If one were to tear a pec on bench or lose consciousness on squat, whatever - due to length, these safeties are only good if you still have some decent control of the weight. I just started to workout again so i'm not using too much weight but as far as first impressions i'm impressed. I'm 6'1" and the stands are high enough for me to walk the weight in and out and rack it super comfortably.One thing though.I have a 5 foot bar i'm using so the stands have to be pretty close and I have to step over the footing bars to get into a squat position,which is okay for the small amount of weight i'm using now but as I progress i'll need too buy a 7 foot bar so I can move the stands farther apart to open the space for me to walk in and out without having to step over anything. There weren't a whole of nuts and bolts to deal with it. As long you make sure to tighten them well, it's very secure. You might want to use a vice grip or wrench of some kind to help with that and some WD40. The bolts were a little hard to get on without the WD40. You could go to your local hardware store and buy new bolts and nuts that are the same size if it becomes too difficult. Overall, I liked the product.
