I wanted an outdoor shower to rinse off before and after. I thought about a passive solar hot water delivery system. Not enough hot water. I thought about trenching and connecting my hot water supply from my basement. Too much work. Then I stumbled upon the propane instant hot water heater world. I purchased this one. It is totally great. Hot water is super scalding if you set the temp high. I don't recommend that. I did not use the cheap supplied shower head though if I were camping, I supposed it might be useful. I built an outdoor shower and I run both hot and cold to the mixer. The heater kicks in the moment it senses water flow. I can hear the pilot light go on instantly. Hot water takes 10-15 seconds to feel. I don't have a sense of how much propane it will use but I estimate it will be around 600 minutes. We'll see. The gas line comes already connected to the device so I did not have to do anything with that. The other connectors are well made. I wish it came with the stainless steel vent cap. I bought one. I also think the battery compartment is flimsy. I noticed after I bought it that they don't recommend leaving it exposed to the elements. I had it attaches to the wooden back of my outdoor shower. But I got worried about a fire, so I put some blocking on the back of the shower wall and then cut some corrugated steel roofing and attached it to the blocks with the steel roofing making direct contact with it. Then I build a little rain protecting roof a couple of feet over it. It should be fine. It's been 2 weeks. I hope it lasts! So far, so great! Review: Great product and customer service - Background: I purchased this item as a backup in case the power is out or gas is shut off. I also thought it'd be helpful for camping, home renovations, washing vehicles, and pets, etc. Setup: Gasland is a good vendor and gives you everything you need. All items are included except for the two D batteries. The unit has many mounting holes available and they include some drywall and masonry anchors too. Similar to other people on here I installed mine onto a hand truck so I'd be able to move it around easily. First I connected the propane hose, carefully using two wrenches as instructed to avoid rotating the pre-attached brass gas line adapter. Then I inserted the rubber washer into the garden hose adapter and tightened and attached my garden hose. They included two adapters so you can use either side of the garden hose (male or female). I didn't have any issues with leaks and found the threads/fittings to seal up okay without needing any Teflon tape (included also!). I was careful to support the connections while I tightened them. Operation: It turns on automatically once the water is flowing so you can set it to the desired temperature and not worry about having to shut it off. There's a left dial for the gas volume, a middle dial for the number of burners (summer/winter), and a right dial for the water flow. The display shows the current temperature in Celcius. I found the best results with the summer mode, water at the lowest setting and gas adjusted until the temp became 40-45C. It has the capacity to go significantly hotter, it is barely turned up to 1/3 on the gas right now. Conclusion: It works really well, to say the least. The temperature is very stable and it does not consume much propane while it is running. Once set, it doesn't need additional adjustments. I am impressed, especially for the price. The showerhead itself is also good, creating a nice misty stream, and the built-in valve is convenient to control the water. I had an issue with the provided chrome shower hose leaking, but Gasland was able to take care of it quickly. If you plan on using the provided shower hose, keep in mind it may need to be replaced eventually. I ended up replacing the hose with standard 3/8 OD polyethylene and some of the parts off of the old hose. One thing I didn't know is that the top does not fit a standard 4" flue pipe, so effective exhaust gas removal is not easy. Make sure it runs outside and avoid standing close to the gases. Otherwise, this is a great product for the price! ### ⭐ If you have a cold water source . . . Don't waste you money *by T***T on April 12, 2026* I went through two GASLAND Model BE158. The original one wasn’t able to heat the water from my well and a replacement heater experiencing the same issue - - the water would only heat to 90 degrees. I tried three different regulators, used new full LP tanks, and tried reducing the water flow into the heater without any success. The unit would ignite; I can hear the sound of the flame. I messed around with this all summer – GASLAND had me try to troubleshoot on both heaters, but nothing would work to get the water above 90 degrees. In my correspondence to GASLAND I pointed out that the water source was a well and the temperature was approximately 52 degrees. The GASLAND Model BE158 increased the temperature almost 40 degrees, but it wasn’t able to heat it to any further than 90 degrees. I am in Wisconsin, so when temperatures dropped into the 40s, I closed down my outdoor shower for the season. Once I could get back into my cabin and retrieve the unit, I tried to return the replacement heater, and was told it was too late to return it. When I purchase a product like this, I expect it to work properly out of the box and not to have to mess around troubleshooting. GASLAND never recommended another product that could handle the cold well water.
