Sommer 1989. Mehrmals hat die junge Mutter Katja die Herrschaft des Stasi-Regimes am eigenen Leib erfahren. Einer ihrer Brüder wurde bei einem Fluchtversuch an der Mauer erschossen und ihr Lebensgefährte Andreas überlebte seine Flucht in den Westen nur schwer verletzt. Um mit ihrem gemeinsamen Sohn, den Andreas noch nie gesehen hat, endlich die Familie zusammenzuführen wagt auch Katja die Flucht über die ungarisch-österreichische Grenze.Ohne Erfolg. Sie wird verhaftet, während ihr Sohn allein im Westen landet. Für Katja beginnt ein verzweifelter Kampf um die Freiheit und die Existenz ihrer Familie. Während sie sich zermürbenden und sadistischen Verhörmethoden aussetzen muss, steuert die DDR auf den "heißen Herbst '89" zu. Eine Zeit, die bald alles verändern wird...
