Not exactly soft, but not exactly scratching, either. I usually wear a t-shirt beneath it. I live in the south so we don't have that many days when the fleece is appropriate and this thing makes me too warm, at times. I tend to run hot, anyway, and if I wear this fleece, plus a t-shirt, and perhaps a windbreaker, I could probably hike across Antarctica. Don't do that, though; I'm exaggerating but the fleece is pretty warm.
