I first washed my hair with Prell to get all the residue out and rough up the hair shaft a little so it would take the dye well. I did not use conditioner. Then I applied the dye and left it on for 8 hours, under a plastic cap. I have fairly thin hair, so I was able to use just 1/2 a container. I rinsed the dye out thoroughly with warm water but did not immediately shampoo it out. I waited until it was totally dry before going to bed. This made sure the dye did not bleed onto the pillow. I didn't shampoo it until about 3 days later, and I always used a shampoo without sulfates. In each case, the dye faded somewhat but at 4 weeks it still looked pretty good. I then dyed it again. I am very happy with the results. I hope that if you try it this way, you will be happy with the results, too.
