The idea of Pacino and De Niro spending serious time on screen together in serial killer cop movie was just too delicious. How could it possibly live up to expectations?Predictably, it got panned and put the kibosh on them doing anything together of its ilk again. Which is a shame, cos it’s actually not so awful. In fact, it was pretty damn good.The main flaw is that both actors are just so aged for the roles they’re playing. They’re supposed to be old-skool cops – the NYPD equivalent of Regan and Carter. They needed to be ten years younger to make sense of the characters; the wily old dawgs, snarling at the young bloods at the precinct, fighting tooth and claw to avoid retirement. One of them has a steamy relationship with a youthful forensic investigator – pivotal to the plot – which only Bernie Ecclestone could equal.Apart from the age issue, the script is savvy, the filming is convincing, the violence is punchy and the zigzag plot had us fully engaged and shouting possible outcomes at the screen all through. Pacino gets all the wiseguy dialogue. De Niro has to deliver a difficult performance, which feels kinda blunt under you understand what’s going on underneath.Totally decent Saturday night movie, in fact.8/10 ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Must-watch *by S***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 9 April 2010* Having read the bad reviews for this movie, I wasn't expecting much. But it was quite brilliant. Much better than I expected, and the Mafia duo do a brilliant job. De Niro is absolutely amazing as the old-school tough guy cop, while Al Pacino is a bit lazier with his acting, showing his age a bit more (he's 69), but still good. The movie is extremely exciting and is not boring for one second. A great cast, including 50 cent, who does his drug dealer role quite well (although not as scary as i had hoped...more of a wimp really). The story is very good, extremely watchable, clever, and coherent. The twist at the end is also very good.I've seen the slew of reviews saying how bad it was; I can tell you that those reviews are utter rubbish and just proves how little reviewers in this country know about movies. Apparently all these reviewers guessed the ending from 20mins in. Maybe they were all psychic, maybe I'm just dumb, or maybe...they all read a bad review somewhere online and decided to copy it. These reviewers have the mentality of 5 yr olds who want to throw away anything that's not new. This has been done before, that's been done before, so the movie must be rubbish. How many possible scenarios can you come up with? It's a modern, fast paced thriller. It can't compare with Heat (as all these reviewers mention a thousand times), but Heat is a different kind of movie, with different roles for the characters. Heat is not a classic mystery thriller; Righteous Kill is, and one of the best in this category.Considering De Niro and Pacino are nearing 70, this is an absolutely brilliant movie.
