Your 2000 XC70 uses this element.Many people use a cup style (85-86mm, sheet metal, cost $6 to $9) socket to grab the bottom of the canister and turn it with a 3/8" ratchet drive.Remember, the filter's canister (housing) is a plastic. It's strong enough but you can break it if you're reckless.I use my old fashioned strap wrench around the bottom of the canister where the flutes are. The oil pan encloses the canister so you can only nudge it partial turns but that's enough. After a few nudges you can turn it off by hand.Always install the new "O" ring and give it a slight coat of oil. Use a wooden toothpick or just your fingernail to get the old "O" ring off.YOU DO NOT WANT TO SCRATCH THE SEAT OF THE "O" RING. When you tighten the canister into place you'll feel the "O" ring compress into the bore then when you feel the canister hit its stop, you're there.No need to over-tighten. Make sure to have a replacement 18mm crush washer ready for the drain plug as they get bent up in use.Also, your engine is turbo-charged. They run hot.
