Starting at the beginning. . .setup was effortless. I installed it on a name brand PC with a Pentium 4 processor, 1 gig of ram, running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Installation and operation have been flawless with this OS and hardware configuration. Next point . . . speed. I have never been able to do high resolution scans at this speed; this machine is fast. I have another scanner (different brand)that is nearly brand new, but drastically slower than this little Epson. The V600 Perfection can do high dpi scans in a fraction of the time compared to my other scanner. With my processor and memory configuration the V600 has been able to do 4 instamatic slides at 6400 DPI in about 10-12 minutes. And there is definitely an improvement in output with 6400 as opposed to 3200 resolution. But . . .resolution alone does not tell the whole story either. The output from this scanner has a visual "presence" that must be seen to be fully appreciated. I have also scanned a lot of really old 120 (620) negatives (some in excess of 90 years old). The results have been nothing short of stunning. So much for the hardware. Now to the software . . .I have primarily used the Epson scanner software without doing any "enhancement" commands. On a few occasions I have done "color correction." "Unsharp mask" has been used once or twice and "backlight correction" has been used a time or two. When I have decided to do software correction the results have been good. The color correction command has been very accurate on 40 year old color slides. So much so, that I have not needed to do any other restoration. Finally, some folks have commented on Digital Ice. I have used it sparingly, mostly for creased and torn snapshots. In one particular case, a 70 year old snapshot was creased and torn---some might say "badly mangled." The ICE result was very good, though I decided to use Photoship to finish the restoration. However, the crease and tear correction done by ICE saved me a lot of time and effort in Photoshop Elements. Bottom line . . . I can't believe this scanner was so reasonably priced. Comparing output, software quality and ease of use, the Epson V600 is THE BEST scanner I have ever owned or used (and this is the 5th scanner I have owned over the years). Review: Purpose: I bought this scanner to digitise 1000s of 1970s, 80s pictures of our family. Most of the photos were already faded and lost colour. Will it work well with a modern Mac OSX system.** A: This is an older question. But yes, it works with the current MacOS X system, including Catalina (10.15.x). The Mac Drivers/software are most easily downloaded from the Epson website (who knows what's in the box or how old the CD might be). However, unlike earlier Epson scanner software, the current Epson version is not particularly flexible (though I often use it for a "quick and dirty" scan). For Mac users, they offer a free version of SilverScan 8, a "third party" scan controller that's been around for many years. It is fully featured with both "easy" and "pro" interfaces. For "final" scans, it's the go to choice. (After registering your Scanner with Epson, then you'll get a link to the SilverFast web site, and upon entry of the scanner serial number, you can download the SilverFast product. It requires an "a-b" USB cable (comes with one) to connect to the computer. I use mine with a longer cable (that I had to buy) so it can sit on a table behind the desk with my computer. There seems to be no problem using a 12" USB cable. **Q: I am interested in scanning 35mm slides. Does this scanner do a good job and does it have a slider feeder or do you have to scan one at a time?** A: The scanner comes with a plastic frame into which you can either place two strips of negative film or, by turning the frame 180 degrees, place four mounted slides in it for scanning. The Epson Scan software allows you to select from many options for resolution, color correction, etc, and scanning four color slides at 2400 dpi takes only about 2.5 minutes. You can go higher than that, of course, but with attendant increases in time. In fact, if you're not preserving the slides but merely scanning a few for some presentation, you could get by with 1200 dpi or less, and much less time to scan. I recently scanned about 3,200 slides of my father's from 1950 - 1990 or so, all at 2400 dpi. He used Kodachrome most of the time, but many he had taken with Ektachrome film were badly discolored and faded, often looking entirely magenta. The "Color Correction" option did a nice job of restoring some color to these, and I was delighted with the overall results. If you have a large number to scan, you'll find you can get into a rhythm and move along quickly. **Q: does it scan to a jpg file** A: The answer is it scans to jpg format, also, I typically use office mode to scan my photo's, the format can be selected including jpg, bmp, pdf, tiff and pdf at the office mode setup page. Estuve buscando varios escaners y este me parecio bueno para el precio pero tenia mis dudas. La verdad es que no me ha decepcionado.
