Tried to replace them one at a time but found the new one to be too long and incompressible. Also, the C-clips did not cooperate. Finally, in frustration, I disconnected the other old strut as well to see if it would allow the liftgate to open a bit further -- and it did! I was then able to replace both struts without difficulty (except for more fighting with those darn C-clips.) Fits good and does support the lift gate once open.These same type were used on a 2011 Escape and allowed that gate to open fully.
