I have seen potential nefarious folks round the world look at my purse and walk away. I also have my husband use it to secure his anti theft wallet in his pocket by just using a safety pin on one end. They also come with chains--if you leave the chains on, the zipper can still be opened enough to get your hand in, so I would recommend removing the chain (as shown in the picture), and attaching to the base of the zipper so as to minimize the the distance you can move the zippers apart. I would also recommend that you use it on bags or backpacks that have inside panels, and pushing the zipper until it is over the panel so that even if they do get it partially open, they can't reach anything inside the bag. I don't know a lot about pickpockets, but I imagine that these are, at best, psychological deterrents. With a little time and determination (which you might have if you were on a crowded bus or in a large crowd standing still) these could be undone without too much effort.
