Aside from baby Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes in his Princess Bride heyday, the story of Lady Jane Grey, the 9-day queen is one of my favorite historical stories.  Pushed to take the throne by her family and then quickly deposed, tried for treason and sentenced to death, hers is one of the more tragic tales of the Tudor period.  The movie holds up quite well, not feeling too dated by its 1980s production it benefits from being a period piece.  It sticks pretty closely to actual historical events.  It's something that I've watched several times and not been sorry to revisit.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time.  That's an odd statement, given that I know it lacks historical accuracy and presents a love story that most likely did not exist.  But the on-screen chemistry between Elwes and Bonham Carter is a "wow" and I'm completely drawn in by that part of the story.  The costumes are magnificent, and some of the scenes are unforgettable. (When she tries to mount a horse wearing a long dress and endless layers of corsets, she can't manage it.  The problem is solved when she triumphantly changes into a man's outfit. Her husband is amused - and approves.)  The movie makes a good effort to depict the intrigue and backstabbing (even of one's own family) to gain power at the highest levels. One could argue that's very relevant in today's political environment.  The message of the movie is that using other people as pawns to advance your own agenda will cause a lot of pain.  And worse.

“Lady Jane” appears to have had quite a large budget; it appears that no expense was spared in recreating the costumes and sets. The camera work was quite good as well showing several lovely rural vistas. The story was, I believe, romanticized and not totally factual, but facts seldom make for financially successful movies. The story was very slow and there were a number of shots which did nothing to advance the story, for example Guilford making faces at the goats. They could have shaved thirty minutes off the run time and not lost any of the essentials of the story. I thought the acting was a little overdone, but not too much really, and I thought Ms. Carter and Mr. Elwes basically did their characters justice. Easy to recommend.
