You can take the blades off and hand sharpen. He uses it often and LOVES it. Warning, blades are VERY sharp and is very easy to forget and reach in front. Despite our warning to a neighbor who purchased after seeing the new "toy" started cutting and did cut his finger when utilizing. So be careful! But, GREAT tool for the yard. Battery life is excellent and amazed my hubby how many uses out of one charge. He loves that there is a battery indicator. Only thing I was dismayed at, the price of the battery pack/charger vs the tool itself, since we only wanted this one.
