Yes, 5 minutes is correct. According to the manufacturer, if Whirlfloc is in the boil for any longer than 10 minutes, the active ingredients become denatured and therefore will not do their job. Please be aware that some may get damaged in transit. Review: I have not done any experimentation whether these work or not. I use a fine mesh basket to hold the hops but still get a lot of sediment. These tablets are supposed to help. But normally I just wait till fermentation stops and let things settle (conical fermentator) and then rack to secondary before transfer to a keg. This gets rid of most of the trub though the first 1/2 second of beer flow from the keg has residue. You will add one tablet for up to ten gallons during the last ten minutes of the boil. **Q: Useful for "non" boil kits?** A: These are meant to go into the boil, so they probably won't be useful without one. **Q: can you use it in wine making too?** A: Not really, It is really for beer. It is concentrated Irish moss. So it will not do what you are looking for really.
