They actually hold barely 4 gallons. You are very observant. It's funny because I have made this purchase 6 times. I grow a lot of things. I don't like the short wide style with the large rim because here where I live, we have a lot of Brown Widow spiders that are taking over the Black Widows. The Brown Widow is more dangerous than the Black Widow and can actually kill a Cat. The spiders like to live under that large lip and if you aren't careful you can get bit when you pick up the pots. So, I am sure that when I ordered them, the ones I got are the taller with the thin lip. They are better and more safe when it comes to my situation. I don't remember there being two different pots shown when I made my purchase but you have a good question. They show two different kinds. When I purchased they were the taller thin lipped pots.
