Just like Vaseline, but no smell. I use it on my lips. I have also used it on really dry skin on my face as well. I get allergic reactions to chap sticks/lip gloss. This ointment is the best!! I even let my toddler use it for dry lips. **Q: Is it normal for the ointment to smell like plastic/rubber?** A: There IS an odor to it just because it has ingredients. The petrolatum and wax does have a smell to it. It is normal. Originally recommended by my son's allergist, we have used vaniply products for his delicate skin for 4 years. This emollient is like a better version of Aquaphor, in my opinion. It is dimethicone based but is better handled and longer lasting than Vaseline or Aquaphor for my kids. I have the large 1lb tub for after baths in my bathroom, and I carry the small tubes in my purse for after my kids wash their hands. Our 10-year old son was born with moderate to severe eczema and we've tried so many products that I could write a book on the best.We bought Vaniply to specifically target the skin around our son's lips. For about a year now, we've managed to keep eczema under control except in this area. Because the skin around his lips gets dry often, he licks them which forms a red ring of anger around them. We've used Aquaphor for years but it just stopped being effective. We switched to pure Lanolin for a bit and it while it worked great initially, it didn't take long for it to be ineffective. Stumped on what to try next, we went to National Jewish Hospital (our skincare experts in Denver) for help. They recommended Vaniply and gave us a few free samples. We were hooked.Vaniply is from the makers of Vanicream, which is probably the single best lotion our family has ever used. We use the lotions and sunscreens. None of the Vanicream line products cause irritation or allergic reaction (which is quite common in our family.) We were psyched to try Vaniply ointment because our doctor explained that it doesn't have alcohol or Lanolin. Alcohol can cause irritation and Lanolin can often cause a build-up of resistance with long-term use (which we found to be true with our son.)I love the way Vaniply feels on my lips and so does our son. It's silky and smooth and doesn't have a smell. It stays put for a long time. I've replaced every bottle of Aquaphor and Lanolin in our home now. We're psyched to make this one our standard. The only thing I would change about these little .32oz tube is to have the top attached somehow. Because the container is small and the top is tiny, we drop it a lot.
