It works really well on athletic or walking shoes which tend to have that extra height on the back of the shoe to cover the achilles tendon. That little extra height wants to collapse all the time when you're putting on the show and this prevents it. As for this specific item, the extra length is very helpful and as advertised the shoe horn is quite sturdy and well made.
