I know I haven't had any difficulty cleaning it in the past, though. I don't have the regular koh-i-noor pens. The reasons I chose these are several. First, price. Second, they're designed specifically for sketching/hand drawing, third, I didn't need the more specialized features of the more expensive Rapidograph pens. **Q: Does this pen come empty or already filled?** A: Refillable technical pens are never pre-filled. The ergonomics of the nib section are more suited for freehand use. I like the visible ink supply in the clear tip. Threading is universal, so most parts seem interchangable with "regular" Rapidographs. My Koh-I-Noor cleaning syringe, nib wrenches and ink starter fit this pen. Ink flow started as soon as I filled it with the included ink. Shipping was prompt. As with all Rapidographs, I wish the construction was more robust. The quality of the lines that these pens can lay down makes up for the hassle of maintenance. With proper care, these should give years of service. **Q: I love my pen, simple and cheap should it break, but how can I clean it?** A: You actually should clean it every once in a while, because the ink can leave sediment in the nib (particularly if it's carbon based waterproof ink). Here are several different ways to clean it:1) The most easy way to clean it is simply remove the nib and run water through it, and then dry it thoroughly before reassembling and refilling it.2) A better way is to buy a bottle of Rapido-ease pen cleaner. Rince off the excess ink and dunk the nib unit in the cleaning fluid for about 5 minutes, then rinse and dry it, as above. Rapido-ease is excellent stuff and also great for cleaning out dried, encrusted ink. 3) You can buy a Rapidograph pen-cleaning bulb, which is a rubber bulb that will force water through the nib, or you can use a baby ear syringe (which is also a rubber bulb)for the same purpose.4) Expert level cleaning-- remove the nib unit, rinse and dry it. Then carefully remove the cylindrical part at the back of the nib, and then slide out the drop weight unit with the wire attached. You have to be VERY careful doing this --if you break the wire, you'll have to buy a new nib. It's better if you disassemble the nib unit over a bowl so nothing gets lost or rolls away. Carefully rinse all the pieces (you can put then in a cup and run water over them, or soak them in pen cleaning fluid and then rinse). Carefully pick up and dry the outer part of the nib unit, then dry off the drop weight and slide it into the nib unit slowly, being sure the wire slides into the tubular part of the nib. It writes smoothly and doesn't clog. Best pen I ever used. I use it for my artwork which consists of lines and stippling. Ink flows smoothly. No need for shaking. I just tip it back and forward for ink to flow through and it works fine. Only time Ive had to do that was when I refilled it. Ive ordered multiple pens with different size nibs and a few of the same size nibs for convenience when I am using different color inks. Every pen I bought works smoothly and with precision.
