So, no. This is for N frame 6-round revolvers. **Q: does anyone know how well this lines up with a s&w m27 n frame?** A: Perfectly well. This loader was designed for the M27. **Q: Does this speed loader work on a regular (not special) .38 revolver?** A: Since the revolvers that it was made for are .38 special, I would say that it would not. However, it will accept a .357 round as well. A .38 spl and .357 are the same diameter. So, with that being said, a .38 "standard" round should work as well. The problem is that the loader is specific for the cylinder pattern of the handgun. I believe that the "standard" .38 is cartridge is pretty much obsolete and if you were to walk into a store and ask some one for a .38 cal. bullet you would get a .38 cal. special bullet.
