I had just finished reading about the Amazon and searched for a book to introduce her to the incredible diversity of life in this amazing ecosystem. This book is perfect. The information in it is organized in layers from the forest floor to the highest canopy. Each layer is presented concisely and attractively with summaries and beautiful illustrations. The writing doesn’t “talk down” to older kids but yet isn’t beyond the comprehension of little ones. Both the 6-year-old and her 3-year-old sister love it. The pop-outs bring the information to life, and help kids understand the complex relationships of life in the rainforest. An extremely timely purchase as the Amazon fires became prominent in the news media shortly after I gifted this to my great-niece. The pop-outs were originally rather stiff and felt like they could be damaged with rough handling, so Daddy sat with the girls and opened each one carefully until they understood how they worked. We’ve spent hours finding the various animals in their habitats using the keys. This book would be suitable for older kids too as it’s full of interesting and beautifully detailed diorama-like pop-ups as well as informational pages with diagrams and concept explanations. It’s not dumbed down in the least and is one of the nicest books in its genre I’ve ever seen. I know a lot about the rain forest and yet I learned several things by reading this book. The pop ups are gorgeous, detailed, and so much fun ...and educational! I bought the book for my 6 yr old grandson and he loves it. The book has lots of nice detail for older kids (and me) but can easily be used by younger kids by skipping some of the detail and focusing on pictures and pop ups. Use of the book for younger children would need to be supervised because the pop ups are sturdy but will not stand up to rough handling.
