The BRK heat alarm does two things...measures a rapid rise in temp over a short period of time, or temps over 135 degrees (both would likely indicate fire). An attic may not be the place for a heat alarm in Texas since, depending on your ventilation, might exceed that on a summer's day. I placed mine in all places that smoke or monoxide alarms cannot go (kitchen, garage, laundry room, crawlspace, etc. By the way, I currently have extra units as well. **Q: Can this run off only the 9v battery? Want to install in an area without being hard wired.** A: I believe so but the 9 v is only a backup so if you are using the backup all the time then I can see you have to change the battery every few months. Lightening shorted my unit so it used up th9 v quickly n alarm sounded. That is why I replaced it but with 110v operating voltage. **Q: Does this interconnect with other alarms made by First Alert?** A: I just installed with 3 Smoke & CO2 (SC7010BV) and 4 Smoke (9120B6CP) and as soon as it was interconnected all of the Smoke alarms were triggered.
