You use it to find a direction and elevation so you can see if there is any obstruction between the satellite and the dish. A regular compass will not show you the elevation. **Q: How does it compare to Suunto Tandem in terms of accuracy?** A: I've used both pretty extensively for satellite dish installation, I haven't noticed any noticeable difference in accuracy. **Q: Is this magnetic??** A: It contains both compass (magnetic) and inclinometer into an aluminium body. I'm very satisfied, the reading is very clear and the price is competitive. **Q: In what country are these made?** A: Not sure of country of origin, but it reminds me of previous Danish-made compasses I have used. For much chraper *by M***E on November 30, 2014* It's odd that the pouch has s dish network logo on it and they don't mention it. I work for a directv and ViaSat contractor so it's weird carrying the dish logo, but it works amazingly well. I had a suunto before that died after years of abuse, and I find the numbers on this easier to read and clearer. Not to mention the price difference.
