The bib is functional on it's own without the catch tray and the bib is not too heavy or plasticky-feeling to be worn alone as a regular bib. The bibs keep baby's clothes dry and clean. They are a little pricey but not as expensive as replacing an outfit that has pasta sauce spilled all over it.Update: after approx 3 months of daily use both bibs started to disintegrate, the front is completely stained and won't wash out.
